teaching is the most radical form of expression ever to exist is a dual-channel 35 mm slide installation developed as part of Kat's wider PhD thesis, which explores artistic approaches to art history pedagogy in UK higher education. At its most simple, her wider project is interested in a) how artistic pedagogies might offer more and different access to the past and b) how these pedagogies might be employed by teachers in amateur and DIY ways towards transformational ends.
This moving image work is informed by research Kat has undertaken into the performative pedagogy of French revolutionary painter Jacques-Louis David and the ADHD oriented approaches developed by dancer-teacher Beth Kurkjian.
In the work the artist explores performative reenactment, DIY costume-making and play as pedagogical tools, taking as her starting point The Oath of the Horatii (1784) by David – one of the seminal images of the French Revolution and in the history of art.
The work was exhibited with an accompanying soundtrack by Sam Cutler-MacKenzie as part of PLAY! Festival x Drama & Theatre Summer Series at The Boilerhouse, Royal Holloway, 2026.
